Coastal Style Without the Clichés

How to get a relaxed, light-filled coastal look with natural texture and a soft palette — no anchors or seashell signs required.

Coastal style is one of the most popular looks in American homes — and one of the easiest to overdo. The best coastal rooms feel like a breezy summer house rather than a themed gift shop.

Start with light

Coastal interiors are bright. Keep window treatments light — sheer linen or simple woven shades — and choose warm white or soft sand walls that reflect daylight.

Lean on texture, not motifs

Instead of literal nautical decor, layer natural materials:

  • Woven fibers: seagrass, jute, rattan and cane.
  • Washed wood: whitewashed oak, weathered teak or driftwood tones.
  • Relaxed textiles: slipcovers, linen bedding and chunky cotton throws.

Use a soft palette

Think sand, oat, warm white and a range of soft blues and grey-greens. Use the strongest color sparingly — a striped cushion, a vase or a piece of art.

Keep it relaxed

Coastal rooms work best when they feel lived-in. Slipcovered seating, baskets for blankets and a few plants make a space feel easy rather than staged.

Bring it outside

The look extends naturally to porches and patios: teak or white-painted furniture, outdoor cushions in stripes or solids, and woven lanterns.

The result is a home that feels calm and sunlit all year round, wherever you live.
